I am remodeling a kitchen and am struggling with the decision of gas versus electric cooktop. I like to cook but as a busy mom, I don't whip up too many gourmet meals. I know that electric smoothtops are easier to clean whereas gas has better heat control. Does anyone have any insight that might help me make my decision?

Here is the answer...if you are looking for ease of cleaning and speed, the electric is your choice. It will heat your pots and pans faster than a gas range. On the other hand, I am a die hard gas range fan. You have the control of the temperature and clean up isn't very difficult. Go gas...in 15 years when the kids are gone and you want to cook more gourmet, you will be happy with your decision

My experience with electric smoothtops is just the opposite. They are a pain. Those smoothtops collect vapor (as water) and every little spritz or spill ends up right on top. At least with an exposed element, some of it just seems to burn away. I hated my smoothtop and got rid of it. (it also takes a long time to heat up and to cool down, a real minus in my book).
Other than that, electric and gas are really a matter of what you're used to and what you value. When you turn an electric burner to "High" it takes a bit to warm up to that (not much, but a bit), a gas burner is on high immedately. Same is true for turning it down, an electric burner retains the high heat for a while, gas is simply turned down.....now! I live on an island, and we experience frequent power outages. I wanted a gas cook top so I still can cook a warm meal when the electricity is out. Price of gas versus price of electric can also be a factor, check those out. If you're used to cooking on an electric burner, you might be frustrated getting used to gas, but if speed is important, it might be worth it. Gas is faster.

As a professionaly trained chef GAS would be my only choice! I need to be able to control temperature at any given moment and gas prevails in that sense. Electric cooktops are great for a situation as you describe so long as "children" are not present! They can easily get burned and should they drop something on the glass top, it cost more to replace then purchasing the original cooktop!
So, they both have their pro's and con's and personal choice is the only reasonable answer!

I have had both and at the moment I have a smooth electric top stove. They look pretty to begin with but if you can't wipe up spill as you go it leave scratches and grooves in your stove top. Also the smooth surface stays hot to the touch for quite a while after so if you have little ones around it could be a hazard. I would go with gas.

My first question would be, do you already have gas lines in the house? If so, then I would go with gas. I have a gas range and love it. My parents have an electric and love it. Personal preference.

If you cook, then electric is fine.

If you are a chef, then gas is preferable.
