That is a very safe area, right in the middle of the New York University campus. There are lots of shops and restaurants that are open at all hours, so there is always a good amount of people around.
Some people might not think Washington Square Park is safe at night, but it always seems like there are police around keeping an eye out.
There is also very convenient public transportation near there.

Washington Square North is richy. Almost every apartment building has a doorman, and all of the brownstones are well lit. Thirty years ago, it used to be a dump. But when NYU brought a lot of the buildings in the neighborhood, it became the home of many upper middle class individuals and families.

You're not going to find anything safe with a commute that's much shorter and decent schools for your kids without paying triple your current rent, easily. I pay significantly more than you for a large 1 bedroom in a nice neighborhood in the Bronx and it takes me about the same amount of time to get to Times Square (the commute costs less, but not enough to make up the price difference). My advice is to stay put unless you're prepared to spend a lot more money.

Its NYC, and the city isn't always the best, safest place to live. I've met many nice people in Washington Square and many rude, nasty people there too. I think its good to travel to, but not to live in. Try Brooklyn or Queens. In Brooklyn, try Midwood, East Flatbush, Park Slope, or Bed-Stuy. They aren't always the safest, but the rent is cheaper. Trust Frosty Lemmon.

Anywhere around Washington Square is now very good and very safe (by NY standards), but also very expensive.
