There is a north/ south divide when it comes to this in my experience. Misguided northerners tend to call it red sauce. Southerners use the correct name; ketchup.
I've had many arguments with the northerners at work about this and i have come to the conclusion that they're idiots! Why can't they call it ketchup??? They don't call marmite black spread!!!

This is an extremely vague question to try and answer. Ketchup is a condoment, which goes in the fridge and can be used on various things.

A sauce, I guess you could define, as something that you create for a certain item or items, which is a one time thing and has to be re-created every time you wish to use it. But I don't think that's correct, either, as you have bottled barbeque sauces and everything else as well. I think that Ketchup is in the sauce family, it's just not called sauce because it's so easy to come by.

Ketchup (or less commonly catsup) is a popular condiment, usually made with ripened tomatoes. The basic ingredients in modern ketchup are tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, salt, allspice, cloves, and cinnamon. Onions, celery, and other vegetables are frequent additions. Tomato sauce is a condiment made with tomatoes, and sometimes also meat, onions, basil, salt, oil, garlic and various spices.
Ketchup has not always been made out of tomatoes. It started out as a general term for sauce, typically made of mushrooms or fish brine with herbs and spices.
