I have a 12 year old stepdaughter, who insists on styling her hair to cover one eye completely. She accomplishes this by parting her hair so far over it reminds me of a bald mans comb over technique. I have told her repeatedly to get the hair out of her eyes, asked her if she wanted to get it cut etc... This is an ongoing battle, and she is driving me nuts. This also bothers her dad, mother, grandparents etc... However she has told me she just likes it better that way. Any suggestions? I am about to shave her head and call it a day.

How she presents herself reflects on me and my husband. If this is a style she's missed the target. Her hair looks unkept and messy. While I agree she should be her own person, and find her own way, she can do that without looking like she doesn't give a damn about her apperance.

Slap the little brat. Don't let the kid leave the house with her hair like that!

This sounds like a subcounsious jealousy to me. I would explore why you feel that your step daughters hair style bothers you so much. As far as why she is styling tthat way, perhaps she is trying to hide her face b/c of her OWN insecurity, and you probably are not making matters any better by telling her she looks like a bald man with a combover. I would try encouraging her, buy her products that she can use to make HER "look" more flattering, and tell her how pretty she looks. and when her self esteem starts to rise, i bet she will want to show her pretty face more.

hah well it seems this girl is going through the "emo" stage. this has happened to my younger sister too. she was always covering her face with her hair. the thing youve got to do is show her some haircuts that are the same "emo" style, but not one thats covering her face. she can have parted side bangs that go down to about half an inch from her eyebrows. and she can just move them over to the side. heres an example:

as you can see this haircut has a more elegant and girly style to it. but its got a tad bit of "emo" to it too. and this girl also has hair extensions (as you cann see by the shorter hairs on her neck)

so try showing her this. i think shell like it ;)

Try to have a girls day where you two go to lunch and go get her hair done.... maybe take some pictures of a hair style that accomplishes the hair sweapt across her head look but not ugly. And let the hair stylist do it.... Belive me she will thank you in the long run, at 12 she thinks she knows everything but in a couple years she will look back and say WHY did you let me wear my hair like that.... look at these pics.

I, being a 13 year old can see why your step daughter parts her hair like this but also cringe at the thought of such a part. I suggest that you do take her to get her hair cut but if she likes the hair to cover her one eye you can get the hair dresser to give her longer bangs. Hope this helps!

"I am about to shave her head and call it a day."

Wow, you'll really reinforce the stereotype of the wicked stepmother if you do that.

Sounds like she's styling her hair in a variation of the "peek-a-boo" style made famous by movie starlets of the 40s and 50s (i.e. - Veronica Lake). But I'd have to see it to confirm it.

Anyway, why is this bothering you so much? Is it really causing you so many problems?

There are kids out there who don't care about their grades in school, maybe they're skipping school, getting in trouble at school, are doing drugs, having sex, etc.. See where I'm going with this?

What's your primary concern about your stepdaughter? She wears her hair over one of her eyes!!! Oh, no! Quick, call Dr. Phil!!!

Please...

Well, on one point I agree with you, My sister does that, It annoys me to death, like in the summer she did it and it left a tan mark, so she stopped. B/c she was embarassed, On the other hand I agree with your step daughter, It is a fashion trend hitting school to school. Tons of kids do it. So honestly, I would let her be, it's just a trend, in a month or so it'll be out of style.

If thats the only thing your worried about, relax.
Its her hair, its not harmful to her health or illegal. She is a STEP daughter and probably doing it to get a reaction from you,(its working). Why dont you surprise her one day and tell her "WOW"" you look nice today". I bet you leave her speechless.

Please don't shave it if u do she may think u hate her rather explain to her why u all don't like her hairstyle. Let her know how it looks on her and even though others may tell her it's nice they maybe laughin at her. If she does listen then ignore her.
