Heavens... I wish you all would have come to MY wedding! ;)
We actually just had a conversation at work about this, and we decided more or less unanimously that $20 was the standard acceptable gift amount for a casual acquaintence or co-worker.
It certainly depends on your position in life... obviously, if you make a six-figure salary, you could afford to splurge a bit more.
But you say that you're young, and I'm going to assume that your co-worker makes relatively the same salary you do. Just go with whatever feels comfortable to you, and I'm sure they'll understand.
Whoever posted the rule about the gift cost equaling what they had to pay to host you at their wedding... that's a good rule, but in the original question, it was stated that it was a reception for a civil union, with appetizers being served.
I would say $20 is acceptable. For my wedding, I'm going to average that I got $10-$20 gifts from casual acquaintences, $20-$30 from friends, and around $50-$75 from relatives. But, the average yearly income where I live is only about $30,000, too...
Just go with your gut feeling, and take into consideration your (and their) income level.

I know the standard (here in NY) used to be that the amount of your gift (in money form) should be enought to cover the cost of you being at the wedding. So if it is costing them $100 per person, then you can give $100 in either money or a gift.
But it really is a very personal decision depending on how well you know the person, and what is acceptable in your area, and within your budget.

Whatever you can afford, but really if you feel uncomfortable with a dollar amount, there really are reasonably priced wedding gifts out there for under $50.

My husband and I got several gift cards as wedding gifts.....they were all different amouts, but ranged from 30 to 150 dollars, and we appreciated and used all of them. The Home Depot one was great, as was the one from Walmart- we used it to have all of our Honeymoon pictures developed!
