He hung himself, but either the rope or that to which it was attached broke, causing him to fall and burst open.
Either way, he died. No contradiction there.

Matthew 27:5-8 says, "So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’ So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day." Acts 1:18-19 says, "With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood." Which is correct? Did Judas hang himself or did he fall? Did Judas buy the field or did the priests buy the field? Judas hung himself in the potters field (Matthew 27:5) and then after his body decayed and bloated, evidently the rope broke and he burst into pieces on the land of the potters field (Acts 1:18-19). This passage presumes Judas' hanging, as a man falling down in a field does not result in his body bursting open. Only decomposition and a fall from a height could cause a body to burst open. When Judas threw the thirty pieces of silver down, the priests took the money and used it to buy the potter’s field (Matthew 27:7), not knowing that Judas was going to hang himself there. Judas may not have purchased the field himself, but it was the money Judas received for betraying Jesus that purchased the field.

I would be more inclined to trust Acts as an understanding of what early Christians would have said about him rather than a factual account (though I'm skeptical of Matthew too). Luke's gospel and the Acts are both the retelling of stories gathered from several secondary sources, and while on one hand they may provide a more balanced outcome overall, he has probably included some old wives' tales in there for completeness.

Judas apparently hung himself on a tree that overlooked a cliff, the rope broke and his body was shattered on the rocks below. The Bible doesn't specifically state this, but it has been established as a likely explanation given the terrian in the area.

It's believed that Acts is a more detailed account. Apparantly there have been cases when hanging was unsuccessful.
In the Acts version, it talks about that he landed headfirst on the ground, which would defy the laws of gravity. When someone is hung either by themselves or someone else, the rope is around their neck. They die because the neck snaps. That is what hanging is, nothing more, nothing less. It is impossible to fall and land headfirst unless the person's feet were in the noose instead of their head, in which case, they wouldn't die by hanging.

Dont you just love the way that they answer this question? They have had 2000 years of practice answering questions about contradictory passages in the Bible.
Either the guy hung himself or he tripped, fell and "burst asunder". Now, they all state he hung himself first, then fell off the branch and burst open... But my reading of it sounds as if the guy was still alive and walking around when he tripped and fell and burst open.
Pay no heed to their responses - it is furthering the doctrine of lies that they have prepetrated on society for 2000 years.

Not familiar with it, but when a person dies, their bowels loosen and their intestines will fall out. Pretty nasty, I know, but true. Go see "Waking Ned Devine." There's a scene where two guys slip on the dead man's entrails!

Judas did not hang himself, he was on one of the crosses beside Jesus after being betrayed by the people who paid him to betray Jesus.

Both are True, He hung himself, and the limb gave way so he fell and burst asunder.
Let the Words of God be Truth, and the thinking of humans false.
