I agree with patricia_g. It depends on what you want for your kid.
Hawaii is nice because the people are friendly, crime's not too bad (other than property-related crime), weather is gorgeous, it's a laid-back environment, and very wholesome in general. California is nice because IMO there are better schools in some parts of California. Your kid might get a better education in California. It's a little colder in California, but not too bad. You'll probably make more money in California and be able to afford more things (school supplies, etc.) for your kid in California since salaries are lower in Hawaii. There are better and worse areas of California in terms of crime to raise a kid, so you might find a good neighborhood in Cali.
All things considered...I'd choose Cali.
