I think it's more probable that the people who claimed to talk to God were the ones who where schizophrenic. Could be one of the reasons we don't take anyone that calls them selves a prophet now days seriously. We have an understanding of mental decease now days, if someone tried to pull what some of the prophets did back then, they would be considered crazy today. You can see what might be considered evidence of mental instability even in the Bible with Mosses, God only seems to talk to him when he is alone.

Well if you believe modern day psychiatry, pretty much all of us are possibly schitzophrenic, if not that then I'm sure they could come up with a suitable lable from their Diagnostic Manual for
Jesus and anyone else who tried or tries to help mankind.
