I had posted a question about nursing, and explained that the momma dog had 2small lumps by her nipples, well Today I checked her for milk agin and the lump popped, out came some puss, I called the vet and they said it is normal it's just because this is her 1st litter and 1st time nursing, just to put a warm towel on it dayly till it clears up. Well I don't know if its me or I am just worring too much, but the pup seems to be weak. Usually when I hold it to check her out, she is really active, today when I went to check on her, she just layed around in my hand, I tried to put her on the nipple but she didn't want to eat, Is she just being lazy or could there be something wrong? She did move around on mommys belly, and fell asleep right away. But seems weak or just really lazy, Are pups that lazy? Or should I be worried?

Pet stores sell puppy formula and bottles that you can use to supplement your puppys feedings. Also get the puppy to the vet. If the puppy has worms (common with new puppies) the vet will give you a de-wormer which will help the puppy get the most nutriution from her feedings and not be fighting of the parasites as well. And will help prevent anemia (check her gums to see if they are turning white)....All the puppies will need to be de-wormed if they havent already (and if they have them). A chilled puppy should be warmed gradually. Rapid warming using a heating pad causes the blood vessels in the skin to dilate increaasing heat loss, expends more calories and creats a greater need for oxygen. This harms rather than helps. The best way to warm a puppy is to tuck him down next to your skin beneath a sweater or jacket and let your own warmth seep into the puppy. Correct mild to moderate dehydration by giving a warmed solution such a Pedialyte. Give 1cc per ownce of body weight every hour by eyedropper or baby nurser. If a commercial solutions is not available, as a temporary method you can substitute a solution of one teaspoon of granulated sugar to one ounce of tap water. If puppy is severly dehydrated, in which the puppy is too weak to nurse, this needs to be treated by a vet immediately. Dont allow a cold puppy to nurse or receive formula, When chilled, the stomach and small intestines will not digest or absorb milk, The puppy will bloat and perhaps vomit. Once the puppy is warm an wiggling about, begin supplemental feedings to supply calories. It is better to intervene early and start hand-feeding rather than to wait until the puppy is in obvious distress. Your vet can guide you further. Good luck to you. You can do it!

See another vet! Puss = infection. If it's coming from her nipple, she's passing it to the puppies. They certainly don't have the immune systems yet to fight off something like that. If your vet told you it was normal, see another vet. It's not normal nor healthy for a puppy to have to drink puss-infested milk. An infection could easily kill the pups and it's not good for mom either. Please get a second vet opinion... and make sure he looks at her and the pups... not just over the phone. It's too easy to lose info over the phone (he might have missed the "puss" part, thought you said "stuff" or god knows what).

The mother has mastitis, pus coming from a nipple is not normal and the mother needs to be put on antibiotics. The infected milk can make the puppies sick and it also is so thick that a pup can't easily suck it out. You may need to bottlefeed or tube feed the pup. The mother MUST be seen by a vet, because untreated mastitis can turn into gangrene, which will kill her

I would definitely seek the opinion of a different vet. This should not be a "normal" thing. The puppy seems to not be getting proper feeding from mom and that's a problem. Likely the vet will suggest bottle feeding to suppliment until mom is able to nurse properly.

Call another vet. It sounds like mom has an infection and is passing to pup. Call someone right away.

Your vet is an idiot, please see another one right away!

Sounds like the mother might have mastitis, if so she needs antibiotics. You may need to hand feed the puppy. Act quickly, tiny puppies like that don't have a lot of reserves.
