Nuclear weapons come in two flavors. The fission bombs split Uranium or Plutonium atoms in a rapid chain reaction releasing tremendous amounts of energy. This is the nuclear blast.

Or they fuse hydrogen atoms together, usually starting with a smaller fission explosion. This releases even far more energy for a much bigger blast.

Fission bombs are usually measured by how many kilotons of TNT they would equal. Fusion bombs are usually measured in megatons of TNT.

For more in depth information I recommend you go to wikipedia.org and look up nuclear weapons.

Nuclear weapons are the practical use of e=mc2, the release of tremendous amount of energy when mass is destroyed. Extremely small amounts of uranium (mass) is bombarded by neutrons and the result is a chain reaction of mass converting to energy.
