There a a few different types that I use in the following cases:
1. gut (plain or chromic) - these are dissolvable. Good for cases where a follow-up isn't really necessary. But can collect plaque about them, and become annoying to patients when the loosen up. The chromic type can last weeks, and I don't see the need for them in dentistry.
2. black silk - these are non-dissolvable. Easy for the dentist to see and use. Also collect plaque. I don't use these much anymore.
3. monofilament nylon - non-dissolvable. Easy for dentist to see but more difficult to place and remove. Much cleaner than gut or silk.
The dentist will tell you if you need to come back to have your sutures removed. If you can't remember, then call his office.

There are basically 3 types of suture material that dentists use: 1) braided silk 2) plain gut 3) chromic gut. Both gut sutures resorb on their own in 7-10 days. Only the silk suture requires removal. Lots of oral surgeons select silk because: its easier to use, and the follow up visit for removal provides a second look at the surgical site to ensure proper healing.

Internal stitches will usually be dissolvable but the ones on the outside of your body usually need to be taken out by a doctor.

Depends on the injury and the severity. Most of the time the doctors want you to come back so that at the very least they can check for opening or infection.

I just had surgery done today .I have stiches in that does not resolve they have to be taken out.
My dentist said that the ones that resolve themself would resolve to quickly in the mouth so it wouldn`t make no sense to put them in.
Best it is to call your dentist to make sure which onces he put in.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I didn't have to go get them taken out. They partially disolved, but sometimes I had the knotted part come out when it was ready, and had to just throw it away.
