I have seen this done, put up a semi-permanent wall with its own dividing door. There will be no permanent damage to the fabric of the house. Buy 3"x! 1/2' rough timber, and erect the wall making sure that a piece is on the ceiling. Screw this piece into the joists of the ceiling, about 4 is all that is required as the verticals will hold it in place anyway. Erect verticals at 400mm apart, and nail plasterboard directly onto it .Make door frame buy cheap door (£20) Tape the seams and paint with emulsion.
Should'nt cost more than £250

So you were quoted £1500 to put up a partition wall. Well I'm not a builder but we've had plenty of work done here over the years and that sounds extortionate. Maybe he didn't want the job, or was quoting for all sorts of other bits as well. Get a couple more quotes - tell them you want a decent, cheap, quick job and will do the decorating yourself and see whether it becomes more affordable.

If the room is large enough you could try using bookcases for a divider, I could suggest other things, but at that age, they would probably knock down anything lighter, unless they don't get fiesty. And bookcases can come fairly reasonable. Did that for a diffrent type of area, had taken and alternated the shelves though, so there was shelves on both sides of the "wall".

You could get some tall storage units and use them to divide the room, or if it is just for privacy, not to stop sound, a few sheets of 8' x 4' marine ply would only set you back a couple of hundred. and they would be easy to secure top and bottom.
Not forgetting to check for wires and pipes.

assuming its big enough to split into two and live comfortably, put up some dry wall, 2 sheets. of course you have to put up the frame / metal studs first. Now if you want to paint and put electrical or whatever, it will be a lot more complicated.
bottom line, google "putting up dry wall"

you could maybe buy a screen to put accross the room, or put a curtain pole he full length of the room and have it separated by a curtain.
