Why do people have a perception that blondes are silly and dumb????

I find it quite offensive as im a blonde and am studying politics at university and would defo not class my self as either silly or dumb. And i think people stereotype to much too.

Hi Amy Im Amy also and blonde. All my family sends me blondes jokes and stuff and I have wondered the same thing,maybe Its cause we are actually smater the brunetts or red heads. I guess. HAHAHAH!

it's less a stereotype towards all blondes then it is towards the ditzy, shallow, fashion/media obsessed girls that like to play on the stereotype to get attention. If they didn't play it up there wouldn't be a stereotype in the first place. i even know several blondes who are quite ingenious, however they feel the need to act stupid and ignorant to draw the attention of the dumbass males that would be offended and feel less "dominant" to have a girlfriend smarter then them. I guess i'll draw upon another stereotype and say the majority of these guys are the "pretty boy's" or "jocks" that obviously use the best of their natural gifts, neither of which are usually inteligence. It all depends on your interests in the opposite sex i suppose. Just a guess but i'd bet you like inteligence and personality over pure physical beauty in a guy.

Actually I think the perception or stereotype began with beautiful early pin ups. Blondes could get by without using their brains and just using their looks thus the Cliche "Blondes have more fun" or the term "Blonde Bombshell" refer to blondes using beauty rather than knowledge. Therefore, all beautiful blonde women are stereotyped as stupid because they don't have to be smart to get what they want.

I think it started because a lot of famous blondes you see ARE silly and dumb-acting, some modern ones are paris hilton, anna nicole, tara reid, etc....

to me, it seems like bottle blondes are more prone to be seen this way than natural blondes. obviously we can't all really think that every single person that was born with blonde hair is dumb. no way, no correlation. BUT maybe dumb people are more likely to WANT to be blonde and go and dye it that color. maybe.

also, its a known fact that a lot of guys like blondes, so brunettes are jealous and catty and like to perpetuate this so they can feel better about not being blonde.

Well if you look at people like Brittany Spears and blonde's like her, that is a proper perception. Now if people would just look at people like Cameron Diaz, they would have a whole different perspective, but Cameron does not put her self out there like the other bimbos do. I agree, blonde's are probably number 1 in being stereotyped, and no, it's not fair.

And unfortunately you are correct it is a sterotype and only applies to some blonde ladies.
But when people (men) think of blonde women they also tend to think of tanned 6ft goddesses. People don't complain when the stereotype is in their favour.

If you complain on Q&A about dumb blonds it keeps feeding
the myth. Getting up tight just gives them more amunition
