In general, you can ask for help at an antique store, or an art auction place, depending on what you want to get appraised.
Also, if you only want to get an idea, you could sign up at www.goantiques.com, and see the prices of the stuff they have and compare with yours.

It all depends on what kind of heirlooms you have.
If Jewelry, a qualified Jewelry Appraiser. Such as:

or http://www.appraisers.org/
The latter site has appraisers for Gems and Jewelry as well as for Personal Property.
If you describe what kind of heirlooms you are talking about I might be able to come up with a better answer.

The previous answers are all good, just one suggestion though, and this is from past experience, look into the business first, and make sure that they are of good standing, ask around for references of the company
