I would not say it's rare, falling stars occur all the time. In the past six months we've also had several meteor showers. They occur about every other month, most of them are just not that spectacular. The Leonids are coming up Nov. 17, that's usually a good one to catch.

Get a book on astronomy. Find out when the meteor showers are. Go out on a clear night away from street lighting and look in the right direction. Wait a bit. You'll see dozens per hour.
On a normal night, in the right conditions, you should see at least one if you're patient. You just need to look. God isn't involved and it would be vanity to think he was. They're just ancient little bits of space dust that have been hurtling through space for millions of years, only to burn up in our frictive atmosphere.

I saw 6 in an hour up north near Upper Michigan. I saw 5 when I was on a 4 hour cruise in the Atlantic Ocean. In Miami area you see no shooting stars because of the light pollution, unless a hurricane hits. So, yeah it's normal.

i live in central america where i spend most nights on the beach looking at the starry nights. mate the things i have seen are mental. i have seen 4 or 5 per night. i have even seen many strange lights, even one that went up instead of down (shooting star) whats that all about?
so the moral of the story is how long per week do you look at the sky? i bet it is not much, look more see more

Falling stars are actually just space debris entering out atmosphere at an angle. They have nothing to do with anything else.
A space rock entering the atmosphere is no predictor of any bad times to come, or any good ones.
