I have a 1989 ford mustang cobra 5 speed. My gears whine everytime I take off. It does this in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. When I push in the clutch to change gears it stops and starts as soon as my car is in gear again. I am thinking it is low on transmission fluid. (No stupid comments about gear oil because I think I know my car and what it takes. I have been told by several mechanics that it takes transmission fluid) What else could it be if that's not it?

It sounds to me like it may be the input shaft bearing. I say this because when you push in the clutch it takes pressure off of the input shaft. Somethings I would try first are; change the trans fluid (you are correct, it does take trans fluid) and add a friction modifier like Lucas. I just thought of something else as I was typing. Can you tell me if the noise is coming from beside you or if it is comming from the rear end? It could be possible that a rear bearing is making noise and not the transmission. Also, does the noise change with the speed? Just a note, I have 5 sisters that know more about cars than most men.

Has it been doing this for some time? Has it just started? Is it getting worse fast?
If it happens on load and not otherwise then I think that either you have simultaneously worn out all the gears, which is unlikely, or you have a failing bearing.
And yes, many Ford T-5 boxes use ATF instead of gear oil. Strange but true.

you problem is that the tranny shot and im surprised the car is still running all fords in the 80s are junk and it probly has a 5.slow in it to right, junk. do yourself a favor and get rid of it if you want a real car buy a camaro everything is interchangeable and there faster the mustangs anyway. plus they look way cooler too, well if your cars so nice why do you have problems with it?... oh yea thats right its a FORD and if you were a real women you would be driving a chevy cause no real man would let you buy a ford. IVE BEEN WORKIN ON CARS MY WHOLE LIFE AND I KNOW FORDS A JNUK SO U SHOULD TAKE MY ADVICE OR YOU'LL FIND OUT THE HARD WAY. oh yea 1 more thing did you ever think the problem could be the driver itself, because if you dont know how to drive you can easily wreck a tranny

It is the sound of a transmission fluid pump. My 96 ford truck just got a new transmission but it started making a noise when I put it in gear so I took it to AAMCO and they replaced the pump. I dont recommend driving your car untill you get it fixed. My transmission was $2000.

It sounds like you have been driving it for a while so you're probably right about it being transmission fluid. That seems like something that would happen due to a low level of transmission fluid anyway.

Lots of manual gearboxes whine when going up through the gears. (shifting)
You SHOULD keep an eye on the fluid level as apart of normal service, not just when noises start.

BOWTIES ARE FOR WEDDINGS OVALS ARE FOR RACING!!! there was a service bulitin about the fluids the factory used not being able to handle the lubrication and heat displacment needs of the tranny.in my 1974 ranchero gt 460 c.i. with a borg warner.... I had to go with a much thicker durilube formula first see what ford recomends...
