You simply can't spot reduce. When you target 1 area, you can build and tone the muscle, but not reduce the fat. The fat has to come from all over the body and your body decides where it comes from. Muscle and fat are different. By building the muscle, you are not exchanging muscle for fat. You are gaining weight because you are consuming more calories than you are burning. The places you are gaining are predisposed. Have you noticed men who are all belly ? If you look at them from behind, you would never know they were fat. And then others, like myself, who carry any extra weight on their hips. Thats just the way it goes. So, you are not gaining weight in your thighs/hips because you sit all day. You are gaining weight because by sitting all day, you are burning less calories.

To lose weight I recommend eating more meals( 5-6 ) of smaller sizes. Drinking lots of water. Eating breakfast is also very important. When you skip breakfast or eat junk( McDonalds or doughnuts), you send the wrong message to your body. It burns less, or, saves calories for later because it isn't sure when it will be refilled. Eat a big bowel of a healthy cereal or some fruits, etc. If you don't have time to exercise, make your day a day of exercise. Park away from building, take stairs, walk whenever you can, anything to burn more calories. When you are watching T.V., do some kind of exercise. Do a few push-ups, some ab work or even some lunges or squats( deep knee bends ), anything to burn calories and pump the muscle. When you pump the muscle, you burn calories at a higher rate all day. So if you eat better, do a little bit of muscle work and burn more calories during your daily activities, you should be able to lose weight.

Unfortunately, target weight loss is not possible. You can not try to lose weight from one part of your body and not the rest. Some people are genetically predispositioned to carry their weight differently than others. For what it is worth, carrying your weight in your thighs rather than your stomach is healthier.

The only way to lose weight on any part of your body is to lose weight on all parts of your body. Get on a diet of healthy foods and start exercising. That won't guide you wrong.
