During the majority of the year wasps feed on garden pests like caterpillars, it is only in the late part of the year, when the Queen wasp has thrown them out of the nest and will not allow them to feed on the stored honey, yes wasps do make a type of honey, that they start feeding from sugary things such as fruit, and of course jam. At that time of the year it is also colder, and they are sleepy and sometimes look for somewhere to hide, and they do sometimes crawl into pockets. It's then that they sting. Normally, if you leave them alone, they will NOT sting.

There are many kinds of wasps, some of which are useful and parasitize and reduce the number of other insects. The common "garden wasp" is a source of food to other creatures. They may also protect my fruiting trees from the attentions of small boys!

Wasps have been around for a long time and predate the dinosaurs by a considerable margin. Some of them are voracious predators on other insects and therefore help control their numbers.

They're the devil's children. All they do is steal sugar and sting people. I hate them. I'm really scared of them too, especially when they chase me or fly too close to me.
