Its pretty safe but at night stay away from La Perla (near El Morro) its a getto-ish type community. I have lived in PR all my life and have never gone there 4 that reason. But Old San Juan is a very safe place and everyone is very friendly the best area to go out at night is the SOFO area ( south of fortaleza )

Ps San Juan is not in Porto rico Its in Puerto Rico =D !!

Old San Juan: safe depending on location. During the day you will be fine no matter where you go. If you go by your self stay where the people are. But if you are in a group going around the shops and El Morro is quite safe. If you need to ask directions ask. Most everyone is friendly. At night time it really isn't so bad. But try to stay in well lit areas. It isnt all that not safe but better safe then sorry. I hope you have a great time. I lved it.

i used to live in san juan, i lived in a pretty bad neighborhood. puerto rico isnt that safe, especially for a tourist. if ur gonna go there then u should really stay at the resort n be really careful if u go out on the street.

n after 10 pm, dont stop at any red lights cuz people might car jack u.

its pretty safe, there will always be petty thefts and such, but no major crime sprees, check these two websites for more information.
I try to visit the state dept website just to make sure there aren't any riots going on before i travel out of country.

Do NOT!!!!! wander off into the private neighborhoods. Stay in touristy areas and you'll be okay. Don't mess with the locals. Be careful where you use a video camera and try not to use one at all.

I have heard that it is beautiful. If you search for tickets on line you can get them pretty cheap. My boss just went in Oct. I found $200 tickets on-line for him.
