I personally think that 'being here' does not equate to having an automatic purpose. I think that "now that we're here, we choose to create a purpose for ourselves".
From a Christian's perspective, I would think that having been given free will suffice for us to think for ourselves and act according to the dictates of morality to honor God.
From 'another perspective' (which to me is not far from my views as a Christian), I'm here through a coincidental series of events that was unplanned and my future (or end) is determined by no one other than myself and the behaviour of the world around me.

DO WHAT? How many of you people had a kid for the sole purpose of being there for you?if this lady goes out and has 5 kids for the sole purpose of getting child support, people would have an issue but yet you turn around and say the same thing about god and wonder why they see him as petty? I have to disagree with the idea that we were put here to be puppets and to give him all our money.
I believe in life after death but not in the whole heaven and hell. I feel like we are here to experience all our world has to offer. If we get it right we move to the next level what ever that is. I feel that the levels ( possibly something as simple as birth signs) could be infinite but you reach each level of existence through understanding. I came to this conclusion when i started thinking how can we have autistic people that can play whole concertos but have never heard the song, kids that can paint like D' venci but have never seen any of his works. I believe they retained their knowlege from the life before the present one which may be why they are mentally retarded or are unable to express themselves so that they can't tell us what's going on. My version might sound crazy to some but at least there is thought behind it.

The real question is - - - what is your purpose. The purpose to life is different for everyone. The basic purpose I believe is to learn as much as we can (spiritually), and secondarily to discover what our individual purpose is here. You have one, you just haven't discovered it yet. It would be a long story to tell you how to do that. But, start off by thinking about what it is that you have enjoyed doing (I mean for the betterment of yourself and those around you) all your life, then build on that.

In Taoism there are several schools (as normal in such an old philosophy) but there is one that gives this explanation of the life's purpose: the Universe or the Mind does exist, it is everything and however It does not know itself, so through infinite forms It develops beings to explore Itself, each life is just a stream of awareness that helps the Tao to know itself. By example the Tao did not know that there were neutrons until Chadwick, a stream of awareness discovered them. So the life's purpose is not our purpose, but Tao's purpose.

God didn't put us here just to indulge ourselves or have a good time (at least in the way you probably mean it). God put us here for a purpose—and that purpose is to live for Him and experience the joy of His presence every day.
The problem is, God wants to be at the center of our lives‐but so do we. We want to run our own lives and be free to do anything we please because we think that must be the path to happiness. But when we live only for ourselves, we find it doesn't bring us happiness after all. In fact, a life of self-indulgence only leads to emptiness. The Bible warns, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death" (Proverbs 14:12).
But God has another way for us—His way! It alone is the way of peace, and it alone will bring us true happiness. Not only that, but His path alone will lead us to heaven. What is that way? It is the way of the cross—Christ's cross. On the cross Christ took away all our sins and selfishness, and now He wants to come into our lives and replace them with His love.
Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10). Turn to Christ today and ask Him to come into your life. Then ask Him to begin changing you from within—and He will, as you yield your life to Him and allow His Word, the Bible, to shape your life every day.

God wanted other beings to have life, to move and exist. It is more fun just going shopping than being dead. Or gone.
Take a person with a job he loves, a decent house, and friends to be with, a reasonable amount of good health. Does he want to die? Or does he view it as the worst thing that can happen to him? Is it so strange to think that God would be so kind as to want for us what are parents do? Loving kind parents want their child to be happy. To be a good person. To love others and be loved by others. To love their job, and it contributes something to society. They have what they want a cabin in the woods.
A cottage by the sea, A apartment in New York. What ever makes you happy. That is what a loving parent wants.
That is what God wants to as the most loving parent we could have.

Only you can answer that for yourself.
Purpose is something humans attach to things which may have no inherent purpose. Most things don't have an inherent purpose.

Why MUST we be born here for a purpose, mere assertion due to the arrogance of humanity (I do find it amusing that believers are always calling us atheists arrogant, I mean how arrogant can you get?). We are here to reproduce, get over it.

The real purpose of life is to exercise our gift of free will. To make our own decisions and take our own actions. And to accept the consequences of these decisions and actions.
The greatest decision we must make is whether to open our hearts and our minds to the love and mercy of the one true God, and accept salvation thru His Son, Jesus...or to reject/deny him.
