I am a travel agent - here is today's briefing:

Economy Class Free Baggage Acceptance
2 Checked Bags: Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece.

2 Boxes instead of two free checked bags: Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece

Boxes are accepted on a voluntary separation and limited liability basis only (space available only, in good condition and labeled). During an Excess Baggage Embargo , when no excess baggage is accepted: 1 Box, instead of 1 free bag; Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) will be accepted free of charge.

Some airlines allow members of their Elite Frequent Flyer group (ie. Continental) up to 70 lbs. That "benefit" varies by airline.

Have an enjoyable flight!

What the travel agent may not tell you and what the airlines REALLY won't tell you:

if you have more than the allowed baggage (usually 2 bags @50lbs per bag) it's CHEAPER to pay for the overweight (usually up to 70lbs) than to pay for an excess piece. so stuff 'em both to 70lbs and pay the overweight! :)
