I m a 17 yr recovering addict and I know a lot of people who have detoxed off many drugs and alcohol. No it is not safe to go cold turkey. Alcohol and Heroin are the two things that can kill you if you go off cold turkey. He MUST ween himself off. It may take him awhile however if he joins a support group he will have people who can be there with him through the whole process. It is too dangerous for him to go through this with out help and support from others who have been through this same experience. Please know that either way his life is in Danger the heroin can kill him and so can detoxing without help. I hope you both understand the importance of the matter at hand. God Bless

Hmmm. While there is nothing wrong with cold turkey, especially on bread with lettuce and mayo, when possible, I go for a hot turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, carrots and gravy.

But kidding aside, instantly stopping the use of any addictive substance is going to be really rough. And in many cases might not be advisable without the proper support in place. I would lalways recommend getting advice from a local professional in the field of substance abuse to find out what resources are available locally to assist in the withdrawal. Whether it is the patch for quitting cigarettes or methadone for help along the way out of a heroin addiction those types of things can make a bad experience a bit more bearable.

As well, the person withdrawing from the addictive substance is going to need lots of moral support along the way. Even with substitute substances, withdrawal symptoms can be pretty nasty and the temptation to resume using is the easy way out. Not that they need preaching or anything along that line, more that they need hand holding, reduced external stresses, feeding and lots of fluids, and a heck of a lot of hugging.

I have not done heroin but from the TV show intervention it is very difficult and should be monitored by a team of professionals.
Have him look into rehab and enter it to be looked after by those in the know.

No, it can cause a dramatic rise in blood pressure, among other things, which in turn can cause stroke, heart attack and death. It is also extremely painful, stomach and muscle cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, sweats, chills, etc. Encourage your brother to see a qualified and sympathetic doctor. they will often prescribe drugs for blood pressure and anxiety that, even if he insists in doing it without the support of a detox program, can make it much easier. Good luck and God bless.
