Calories are obtained from food or drink in the form of fat, carbohydrate, and protein. There are no other forms of calories that can be obtained, though there are special methods for obtaining them, such as through an IV.
Your body also stores energy in various forms. The predominant form is adipose tissue (fat). There are many other forms of short term storage as well.
When calories are not being taken in, whether it be short term such as between meals or long term such as in a several day fast, the body relies on its internal stores, again primarily fat, to supply energy for its needs. In long terms of starvation, the body will begin to scavenge nutrients from muscle, organs, or bone to stay alive. Essentially, it begins to eat itself.
The body can survive for very long periods without food, but only a few days before there are health consequences.
