From personal experience:
I wouldn't start taking those kind of pills at your age... you are MUCH too young.

Unless you have a serious condition, you might want to get a second opinion from another GP, in fact I strongly suggest it.

Taking these pills will frig your body up in more ways than one so I wouldn't take them unless it means life and death.

If you have high blood pressure you should consider altering your lifestyle before swallowing pills. Start exercising, eating healthy, lay off alcohol or ciggies etc...

Fast heart rate and High blood pressure can also be a result of being at the doctors. It's called 'White Coat Syndrome' - it basically just means that your heart beats faster and your blood pressure rises because of the situation you are in. When you are at home you might be fine.

You could get a home-test kit. They don't cost much and you can write down your readings over a period of a couple of weeks in your own house. You will get a much more accurate reading than you will at the doctors - when you do have a listing of the readings you have taken, give them to your doctor. Also you should find out exactly where your BP and Heart rate are in relation to the acceptable levels. Don't just take your doctors word on this one. Many doctors throw pills at you before telling you to shape up your lifestyle - or alternative / healthy methods of lowering your BP and heart rate.

Think long and hard before taking the pills - I beg you.

I am 21 years old and have been on a beta blocker for about 4 months. I am currently getting off of it, because my thyroid medicine is working to slow my heart rate down.

Beta blockers are needed because, if your heart is out of range and pumping to hard then you could actually die. My beta blocker has actually helped me alot, it saved my life.

I would talk it over with your doctor, ask your doctor to test you for hyperthyroid, because some symptoms in your body actually cause your heart to go fast. Mine is A thyroid problem.
