If the meals are balanced, one of the advantages is that is helps to regulate blood sugar and energy levels throught the day.

The short answer is that increasing the frequency of your meals regulates your blood sugar more evenly.

Regulating your blood sugar levels has many advantages (especially for diabetics). It gives you constant energy (we have all needed a nap after a big lunch). It gives you calories and nutrients when you need them, which is important for athletes. It keeps your metabolism high by convincing your body that food is not scarce (this way, you can burn more calories in a day by eating the same amount, just spaced out more). It reduces cravings, which can lead to overeating or eating bad things.

If you must eat only 2 meals, they should be breakfast and supper, so as to have them evenly spaced.

3 meals is better, but there is no need to stop there. Personally, I eat 5 small meals a day, and I love it. I don't get tired during the day. I am never hungry enough to binge eat or be tempted by bad foods.
