Persians make fantastic pets! They are calm regal and fairly quiet, though they do play at times.
I must give you some words of caution as well and please, please think about this. A Persian cat is a long haired cat and requires DAILY brushing from the skin out to the end of the fur to avoid severe matting and tangles. Most Persians especially white have brownish discharge from their eyes that needs to be cleaned DAILY to avoid infection. They can also become "greasy" looking and may require a bath weekly or bi-weekly depending on the coat. Due to the long coat they can have problems with feces "clinging" to the fur and this would have to be cleaned away daily. Feeding time can be quite messy as well because of their "flat" faces.
I encourage you to do some reading on the care and maintenance involved in owning a Persian cat. especially a solid white. These are NOT maintenance free pets and require an excessive amount of care, even as just a "house pet". If you dont think you can properly maintain a Persian, please look into other varieties of cats that require less maintenance. A Persian who is not properly taken care of (ie: daily brushing) can develop painful mats or knots that restrict movement and can cause very painful sores on their bodies.
They are also not without their health problems. Respiratory problems and eye infections are quite common in Persians.
Bottom line if you have the time, patience, dedication and a good vet a Persian cat will give you a life long best freind and very loving family member.

We've had quite a few persian cats come through the vet's office I work at. I'd say the biggest consideration is their grooming. Their fur will need regular attention and I wouldn't recommend feeding wet food because it will get caught in their facial fur. I've not noticed any shedding problems, though. I'm not sure how they would react to the birds. The persians I've met are fairly laid-back, dignified almost.

Very good information going on here! I have had some gorgeous Persians before and they do require grooming. I used to have mine given the "Lion's Cut" in the summer and she was so cute!! They also do have trouble with their breathing and eyes draining. I currently have a Scottish Fold which happen to be bred with Persians. Her name is "Booger" because she gets a stuffy nose and when she sneezes she usually has a stage 5 cling-on! haha One of her tear ducts drains outside of her eye and she does get a discoloration but she is a super cat as most Folds and Persians are.
One thing I can tell you is if you're going for a white cat be careful with one that has blue eyes. Due to the breeding these white cats with blue eyes have a propensity for deafness.
Also, my aunt has a Parrot and Booger oves to sit under Jazz's perch and just watch him. It's classic! Sometimes when Jazz is out of his cage, Booger gets in it! haha Cute!

the Persians I've been around don't seem to have much personality. they're beautiful to look at but kinda like a throw pillow just sits there and looks good. Whereas a cat like a Siamese or Himalayan take more to they're owners but also demand more attention

Make sure the birds up where the cats can't get to them. There a well behaved cat but kittens like to play and cats like to hunt. Lots of shedding hair and has to be groomed to stop snarling

It's all just a matter of personal preference. I actually have short hair and guys like it. And i prefer a person with short hair over a guy with long hair because long hair tends to make guys look too girly.
