Can I use anything around the house, like Scope, or salt water, things of that nature?

I pressed on the swollen area and, as my dentist calls it, "juice" came out. Can this be bad or good?

You can't and it's too dangerous to let it go. The abscess can go into your jaw bone. I was looking up adverse events (what I do) and recently a man died. During his autopsy they found that he had an abscessed tooth that he didn't get treated for. The infection spread into his jaw, down his neck and when the forensic doctor opened his chest at the autopsy.....a gallon of pus burst from his chest. Not getting the antibiotic for his tooth KILLED him. Honest.

Pleasem allow me to clarify for you and my fellow colleagues this point on abscesses, their effects and treatments.

Abscesses are caused by deep tissue infections and largely populated by anaerobic bacteria. There are usually several species of bacteria colonizing any one abscess at any given time. Untreated abscesses will continue to grow, and the bacteria will continue to erode healthy tissue surrounding it. However, the bodies immune system will still try to fight it. The net result is that the abscess will be pushed to the surface of the skin so that it will burst, and release it's toxic contents from the body. Hopefully, this will happen before those toxic contents have the chance to do irreparable local tissue damage, or to spread into the blood stream and spread around the body to create new abscesses in different parts of the body.

Treatment is two fold.

First, your doctor. dentist, etc... will want to perform a surgical procedure (i.e. lancing) to open up the tissue covering the abscess. This allows for proper draining and cleansing of the wound left by the bacteria which colonized the abscess. This process is called "debridement".

Secondly, your doctor, dentist, etc... will prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic to kill the remaining bacteria, since debridement does not kill 100% of the bacteria and will not help remove any of the bacteria which may have spread systemically throughout your body.

You need to see a dentist, and you need to take a prescription. Failure to do so could lead to permanent organ damage, disfigurement of your facial bones... specifically the jaw and cheek bone, or in the worst case scenario, it could lead to your death.

Please see an emergency dentist if you are not able to set up a dental appointment ASAP.

I wish you long life, good health, and hope I have given a greater understanding of infectious disease.

You CAN´T. Go to the dentist. Don´t press it, don´t "juice" it; it is dangerous, you could cause a bigger infection or even a facial cellullitis (believe me, you don´t want that). An abcess is an indication of an underlying problem, so the dentist must treat and eliminate the abcess first and then correct what´s causing it.

I once had a patient who was a 20 year old kid who almost died because the infection spread all over his neck almost choking him. We had to put a breathing tube in his neck and had drains all over the outside of his face and neck with pus draining out for weeks. His parents didn't want to take him to the dentist for some reason. Once you get the pus it won't go away by itself, it will only get worse. This is one of the things in life you need to take very seriously or it could get very dangerous very fast.

sometimes the pain from an abscess will go away on its own but the infection itself does not go away. you need to see a dentist for an antibiotic to clear up the infection. If not you could be setting yourself up for a really nasty illness, tooth loss, or worse.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Won't happen. Get to the dentist. Great way to spread even more toxins throughout your body and become severely ill.

Well an absess can be very dangerous, but my husband had one once and he put rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and just applied it to the area. Then he used peroxide to kill the infection. It was gone for him in like 24 hours. I don't recommend doing that but if you have no choice. Just don't swallow the alcohol or peroxide and try not swallowing much until you rinse very well... the infection can go to your stomache and make you very sick.

Good luck
