I tried to open Excel and the computer is trying to INSTALL the program instead of opening it! I used the program yesterday no problems. I tried to do a system restore for a couple days ago but that didn't work. I don't have the Office 2000 CD (which it needs to install Excel again) on hand so I can't reinstall. What happened and how do I fix it???

I tried waiting for the installation to complete but it asks for the Microsoft Office 2000 CD (which I don't have). I tried all the other components of Office Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, and they all work fine.

There are two options when you install MS office software, typical and customize installation. Your problem could be happening for two reasons:
1)When the software was originally installed, it was done w/customize installation. Here you have the option to select component that more specialize such as DataBase connection, languages, etc. When those components are selected you need to identify if you want to run them from the computer or from the CD…. The default is from the CD.
2)You have the typical installation and probably you are trying to use a component that was not originally installed

Either way, you need the CD

It would be helpful if you could let us know the name of the file Excel is trying to install. My guess is that it is probably an ADD-IN

Cancel the installation process and wait if still the problem persists contact your computer expert. Also check is this the same with other Microsoft Office components. Also check troubleshoot option at Excel help and microsoft.com
