If Pig is Pork and Cow is Beef, Chicken and Turkeys are called Poultry, Deer meat is Venison, then what is Horse meat? Not a joke, I really want to know.... Bear meat too?

I think yanitan is quite right. I don't know about horse meat...that's just wrong. I know they do it, but still I am afraid to bite into little pieces of Grissel, fat and jockey.

Bear on the other hand is under a classification of Exotic Foods and Meats. When a animal is not generally common fair it gets into this category...so things like alligator, snake, shark, kangaroo and bear retain their name when they become part of the menu...this I do believe is a inadvertent marketing tactic to be able to charge as much as they do for it.

This is why, in reverse, they have fancy names for common food animals, so it is more catchy to say fillet Mignon, poultry, fresh venison rather than...dead cow chunks-n-bacon, sliced chicken, or Bambi on a plate.

Using the same convention, it would be Cheval for horse and Ours for bear.

We call cow beef because of the old French corruption of a middle-English word for cow "beuf" The French nobles who ruled England after the Norman Conquest of course used French words to refer to the meats they were served, so the animal called cow by the Anglo-Saxon peasants was called buef by the French nobles when it was brought to them cooked at dinner. Thus arose the distinction between the words for animals and their meat that is also found in the English word-pairs swine/pork, sheep/mutton, and deer/venison.

However, in most conversation you would just say "horse" or "bear" or "goat." For reasons beyond this response (read: long answer), some animals that were popular as food 1000 years ago or more aren't popular now. Because of their decreased popularity, those animals didn't get the distinction of a common French name.

Hope that helps,
Odd

I'd like to know the same thing. I've never eaten horse to my knowledge but I have had bear and I LOVE it! But, I'd have to say that we just call it bear so I don't know if there is a term or other name used. I'd like to know though. Thanks for asking the question. I'll be checking for the answer also. Have a wonderful day!
