I am trying to come up with a homemade idea that is real simple for a headboard. I don't want to have to use special tools or buy too much for this...maybe just something with foam and material. Would that work? Other ideas?

Good ideas so far. If I use a door, wouldn't that be too long? I have a full-size bed (54" wide I think). I suppose I could cut it to size (or have it cut for me?)

Piece of plywood cut to the size of your bed and as tall as you want it to be. Put the foam on it then upholster it with the fabric. Makes a nice padded headboard. GO one step further, criss cross ribbon on the headboard, tacking where the pieces intercept and make a neat design or can be used as a scrapbook headboard. You can tuck pictures of a loved one under the ribbons.

Did this in my apartment years ago. Go to any hobby lobby, wal mart etc. and buy a set of cork boards. 1ft x 1ft, they usually come in packages of 12. Get filling... also can be found a wal mart, the cheap stuff as it is just for the head board. Hot glue layer of filling to each cork board individually then cover (individually again) each board with material of your choice. Hot glue regular old thumb tacs to the back of the board and push into wall. This works really well because you can use any material and pattern as you wish, or do a solid thing. It adds texture to your headboard and wont damage wall because thumb tacs make very small holes. Good luck
PS. for an added effect, use ribbon in between boards, ala french memo board style.

An old oak-paneled door would look quite nice. Any folding screen tacked to the wall also. At used furniture/junk stores, you can usually find a headboard that no longer has its footboard or even a footboard. No real need to fit it to the bedframe, 4 finishishing nails will attach it to the wall nicely.

If you're cheap and lazy enough like me, you can do a lot of stuff!

you can always hang framed photos above the bed where the head board would go. its simple and cheap!! go a little farther and hang a couple hooks and drape a scarf curtain through it for a more dramatic look
