I volunteer in a nursing home and want to give my lady patients little (inexpensive) gifts for Christmas. Other than socks, can anyone give me some suggestions on what I could get them? I can't give food items (candy, etc.) because many of them have diet restrictions because of diabetes, etc. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions.

My suggestion would be those little holiday throws that the larger department stores like Wal-Mart sell around this time. They are only $5.00 each, and are a nice fleece blend, come in 5 or 6 patterns and colors. Or maybe you could give them notepads and pens in a little gift bag. Or, if you do have a Wal-Mart, in the make up department there are these nice little bath powder plastic cannisters that come in pink blue purple and are only $1.50, they are pretty, smell nice but not overpowering and have a really nice large powderpuff in them. I'd bet some of those ladies would love something like that. Bless you for being so kind!

Another good idea would be to get them some products from Perlier/Elaria. It is listed under Italian Bath and Body on HSN.com. There are different specials such as 4 tubes of hand creams, and I think for all 4 is about 19-22.00. So it would be about 5.00 a gift. There are also at this time little mini jars of 10 that you could break up into gifts around that same price. There are all sorts of beautiful scents and alot of them can be used for sensitive skin, just in case.
I have been using their products for about 5 years and love it, and have sensitive skin and it doesn't irritate me!

I volunteer at a nursing home too, and I strongly suggest that you talk to the director or the social worker at the nursing home. Some people have allergies and you never know what lotions might do. I think cards are a good idea. Also, maybe you can get some kids to draw cute pictures for them.

How about some books on tape? I know that these are pretty pricey, but a lot of times, you can get them at yard sales, or thrift shops for a couple of dollars. My mother is an avid reader and since her eyesight is no longer as good as it used to be, she really enjoys them (that is why I know that you can find them here and there for a couple of dollars). One reason I frequent thrift shops and yard sales on my free time, and it wont matter that they are previously owned, your patients will get the same enjoyment out of them!

I would suggest just giving them cards. You really shouldn't be that close and personal with your patients but at the same time they would appreciate the thoughtfulness. There is a fine line there that you don't want to cross and you don't want them to feel like they owe you something in return.

Dollar stores usually have lots of little toiletry items such as nice smelling soaps and lotions, or little decorative picture frames. Try walking through, I'll bet you will get lots of ideas!

What is nice is shampoos, dusting powder, bath soaps. Also, little stuffed animals.
