my 10 year old has trouble calming down to go to sleep. a friend of mine told me that it would be okay to give her over the counter melatonin to help her calm down. she weighs about 85 pounds. would this be safe and at what dose? i have talked to her doctor and he suggested benadryl... which has the opposite affect... it makes her hyper. he then told me that she would go to sleep when her body was tired. but every day she is impossible to wake and appears tired. she does have a set bedtime and a regular routine.

if you are truely concerned about the health of your baby you should forgo any tips and hints from friends that involve taking drugs and go and seek professional help. do not think that someone answering on this forum will have any practical knowledge that could be transferable to your situation either - there are always specific case details that won't be taken in to account.

go and see your doctor and explain to them what the problem is - then follow any advice they have specifically for you and your daughter.

if your doctor does not seem to be helping - or understand the full effect of their prescribed course of treatment - ask for a second opinion from another doctor.

The best bet with long-range benefits may be to study non-chemical sleep. Try to become "expert" in all aspects of sleep, including abnormal conditions and problems that children experience. You may be able to modify her sleep patterns by avoiding foods and drink (caffeine-laden sodas?) that interfere and modifying activities (no exciting TV or games near bedtime) and good exercise during the day to tire young muscles. Encourage reading with a trip to the library (with her?) and consult with the librarian (privately? for appropriate reading material that will be both engaging and use up mental energy. Have her go to bed early enough to get more than enough sleep but with time to read until tired if sleep does not come easily. Reading may be a distraction from other interests that may keep her awake. That may also form a life-long habit and help with school. If all fails, consult a doctor, but your personal studies may help you apply the doctor's advice.

melatonin is a natural drowsy hormone. it is not a drug or anything like that. I use it every night because I cannot fall asleep. It is not addictive either. I'm not sure if it is safe for a 10 year old. I would think so, but try to find a health food store as they know more about that. If you do try it buy the 1 mg tablets and give her half of that. I weigh 235 lbs and take about 5 mgs but im also an adult. I would think that .5-1 mg would be safe though.

as a parent of 4, I find it pretty close to criminal to start drugging children because they don't behave the way we'd like for them to do, at the time we'd like to.

Does your boss, if you work, drug you so that your pace gets aligned with his?

I find it hard to believe that any trained doctor would follow you in this?

if your daughter seems tired in the morning it is because she does not get enough sleep. If she does not get enough sleep it is because she either does not get good quality sleep, or because she goes to sleep too late. Which seems to be the case here. Instead of drugs, have you tried:
- bedtime stories
- chatting w her about her day, things that may be bothering her (children have worries, you know, just like adults)
- making sure she gets some physical exercise, I mean real exercise (a 10 year old having tons of energy, typically)

Geez!

sure, ultrasounds are secure..there are extremely no side outcomes on the fetus..I had different ultrasounds with my 2d being pregnant..toddler grew to become into effective. I somewhat have in no way heard of any issues of the toddler from ultrasounds...that's unlike an xray so there is not any radiation or something.
