Yes, Rod C has the right answer for you here.

He totally dishonoured his brother.
He used his brother's wife for his own good pleasure and self-satisfaction, but dd not deliver what was required by God and the custom of ancient Israel.
As was pointed out, someone else had to carry out the proper responsibility to his brother ... and through that one, more honourable, came the Son of God.
So you can only imagine what God's response to this fellow's shallow act must have been!!!!

It was a case of 'pleasure and use of a vulnerable woman without honour and responsibility towards her'

DavidW's answer is the correct one. Onan should have had a child with her and raised him in the name of his deceased brother (levirate marriage). This is a commandment that was given to Israel at Mt Sinai. His refusal to do that was the problem not masturbation.

It's a misinterpretation of what Onan did. It was not masturbation, but a sexual withdrawal during Brother-in-law marriage.

Somebody has preached falsely to you. Many Holier than thou churches preach that the story of Onan refers to masturbation and that he was killed for this act.

This couldnt be further from the truth Onan was killed for his disobedience.

This sin of masturbation does not come from act, but rather where the mind goes while in the act. Usually it is accompanied by pornography, lust, and perversion. This is where the sin lies. In manny cases masturbation is acceptable.

Matt 5:28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

It wasn't the masturbation that was Onan's sin; it was the fact that he 'spilt his seed on the ground' to prevent his wife from having children.

Onans sin was not of masturbation, it was one of coitis interruptus, pulling it out before ejaculation. He had a duty to give his brothers widow a child, he didn't and was slain by God. Isn't God a lovely geezer? (Or geezerette as the case may be)

In that culture, when a relative died it was up to the other siblings or close relative to take the relative's wife as his own so that his family line would continue and also so that the relative's wife would no longer be a widow and have no one to take care of her. Also it was a sign of dishonor to not have children.
The Bible said that "What he did was wicked in the LORD'S sight", not because of the physical act, but because of his selfishness in not fulfilling his obligation to his family.

Onan was not guilty of m@st*rb4t10n, he was guilty of preventing his family line from continuing. None of his older brothers had sons, so it was his responsibility. He intentionally prevented it by withdrawl.
