If you pray to Avalokiteshvara you would most likely be a Mahayana Buddhist. I am not sure you could be a lot more specific than that. He is one of the most, if not THE most, popular bodhisattvas around the Buddhist world. You are most likely some sort of Chinese Buddhist since it is the Chinese name for him. You might also like cross-dressing. (He always looks so much like a woman =) ).

In Mahayana Buddhism (Tibetan buddhism), Guan Yin is just a different incarnation of Buddha. Buddha can take on different forms and will choose the form that has the most affinity with the devotee. Guan Yin (or Avalokiteshvara in Tibetan) signifies "mercy" or compassion and is the form most popular among the Chinese. So it is okay for you to pray to Guan Yin. You are still praying to the Buddha.

Buddhism is a system of philosophy founded on practice not belief. If you are adhering to the moral precepts set out by the Buddha then you can rightly be defined as a Buddhist no matter what theological beliefs you might have.

the word "buddhist" is just a word in emptiness.
do not distinguish yourself as a buddhist to yourself as there may be side effects though you can say you are a buddhist to your friends or people who know you and adding that you believe in heaven etc.
it is up to your wisdom and affinity to buddhism and other religions that you be enlightened to the holy world.
if you ever become enlightened from the view of most audience, you must learn more about emptiness and disciplining yourself in certain ways.
this is because heaven will catch up with anyone who strays away.
the tv news said a few days ago that there is a very large iceberg floating in the ocean somewhere on earth.
pray it is a good sign for future or a advising sign from heaven to those who stray away to repent.
good luck!
