It's tradition.

If you really feel strongly about you each paying your own way, ask her if she'd mind before you actually make the date (so she can be sure it's a place she can still afford). Tell her that you're sure she is worth paying for, but you're a little broke right now/saving up/etc., and hope she understands. If this is an important thing to you and she doesn't like it, then maybe it's for the better you don't date her.

I don't, never have. I have always approached it as, if you pay for this one, I will pay for the next one. A relationship is a partnership. It was considered chivalrous & a way for a man to show that he can take care of his "woman" & that he is worthy of her. But women work too & can have equally well-paying jobs. During that courting phase, it is nice if the guy offers to pay. Once you are oficially together, going out should be a financial "burden" that you share.

The way it has been for centuries, the man is the provider. Even with all the independent women out there today, there are still alot of women that would rather depend on a man than take care of themselves. I guess there is nothing wrong with a free meal?! I don't know, I know a free drink is nice!!

Not all girls. I don't expect anything from anyone, I always split the check and often pay for the whole thing......if you are in a relationship then it's about sharing everything..even the tab!

Because the boys insist that they pay and the girls don't want to come in the way of their chivalry.

Because that's the way it is. You're supposed to take care of your girl.

Because it shows that you will take care of her, and all her needs. A woman wants to know that when she needs it her man will take care of her.

If I were you, I wouldn't label myself as a 'boyfriend'... That is a title that is earned, as well as 'girlfriend'.
