Yes, It smothers them, but you have to leave it on several hours. Mayonaise works too. Since some will be absorbed into the skin, do not use anything that you wouldn't eat. DO NOT use petroleum jelly, you cannot get it out of your hair. Here is a link to a webpage that has more info-

I received a note from local school giving parents the heads up on the newest way to treat lice on kids. The deal is that all that over the counter lice medication has created what they call super bugs. These bugs have hatched immune to the poison in the shampoo. The "remedy"is olive oil applied to the hair and scalp thickly then covered tightly with a shower cap.Smothering for 4 to 8 hours then washed and rinsed thoroughly.A metal nit comb and a bottle of cheap detangler will rid you your problems.Wash and vacum everything.

Looks like cooking oils will smoother the lice, but you have to leave it in your hair with a shower cap cover for a few hours.

Also, you have to get the eggs (nits) before they hatch.

After you treat the person, you need to wash all the bedding and clothing.

The website below gives some pretty good advice.

You know how my mother got rid of the lice I had when I was around 12? Well here it goes she took the floor cleaner King Pine and they still sell it everywhere and pour it on my head, covered my head with a plastic bag for about 20 minutes and wala they were gone forever.
