"Do not mention it." is normally said when a person does something nice for another person and the other person says "Thank you."

It normally means that the person feels the nicety so insignificant and expected that a thank you is not necessary.

A good example would be two friends walking out an automatically locking apartment door and the owner forgets the keys. The visiting friend sees the keys on the way out and grabs them. After the two exit the apartment, the friend hands the owner the keys.

The owner says, "Thank you so much. You saved us from being locked out when we came back with our food."

The friend replies, "Do not mention it."

Take care,
Troy

It's "don't mention it" (not "do not") and people say it when someone is apologizing to them (as a way to express that you have forgiven the offense).

A: I'm sorry I didn't call you yesterday when I said I would call.
B: Don't mention it. I was busy yesterday anyway.

Don't mention it is an expression. It means there is no need to mention it again - it is no big deal.
