It's nice you want to start off "clean" but of course the only way to do that is to square things up with the creditors. $2000. feels like alot but truly it's not and you MAY be able to get most of it reduced to 50-60% by making them an offer.
The delinquient payments for over 1 year have already killed your credit rating so you have nothing to lose in a negotiation with them.

You might even find out that the balances were so low that the creditors reported you as a charge-off. Which means they totally do not expect to see payments on the debts.

You'll never know unless you pull a new credit report.

Best of luck to you.

Have your check your credit history recently? How long have you stayed outside of US? Some items may have been erased from your history already. Begin from checking your detailed credit report. You will need to establish US bank accounts and apply for some credit cards to rebuild your credit. You may have to return to US to do that.

firstly, pay the bills. contact the folks to whom you owe money and work out a payment plan. they may have already sent the account to a collection agency, in which case you work it out with them.

your credit report is a revolving thing, that is, if you clean things up now and go on the straight and narrow, your previous transgressions will eventually drop off.

good luck to you - credit is a very important thing (as you know), and good for you for wanting to fix things.
