Loads of energy is wasted in lighting, but not just because people leave lights on when they're not needed, or because we don't use enough energy saving bulbs.
A lot of offices are simply brighter than they need to be: People's reading improves with the strength of the light up to a certian point, but lighting beyond that is just a waste of energy. Most architects and interior designers are completely unaware of this and design buildings that waste energy all day every day.
The same kind of thing applies to shop signs and advertisements which are often overly illuminated.

What about running a freezer when it is empty. Very wasteful, leaving lights on in empty rooms or even when people are out and/or on holiday as a kind of burglar deterrant.
Leaving tv's and other electronic items on stand-by is a classic one. Also leaving the heating on when no-one is home. It should be turned down to frost level when people go on holiday.
Dishwashers and tumble dryers are a waste of energy as well.
And as for druiving the kids to schoool in a 4x4 when the little blighters would be better walking . . . . .

THANK YOU ALL THREE ABOVE !
This "standby" consumption problem stems from one, and only one issue: _Laziness_.
All else being equal pushing a remote button is about as strenous as pushing a definite ON / OFF button that brings an entire system up or down depending on need.
The advantage and energy saving of the latter is / should be a no-brainer, DAD-BURNIT !.

leaving all plugs switched on and tv on stand by not only wastes energy but also a shed load of money on your bill you are paying for it and not using it.
Is that the type of energy you meant?

How about 20,000 people burning energy waiting for questions on here. I know if it wasn't for Answers I'd have turned off this computer an hour ago, this happens daily, lots of hours.

Power stations waste more electricity than we use. Because we constantly use it, the more and more has to be produced just to keep up with the demand.
