Canon doesn't really have an all-in-one lens. They have a 28-200mm zoom, but with the 1.6 crop factor that doesn't provide any wide angle coverage (28-200 effectively becomes 45-320mm).
Sigma and Tamron have 18-200mm zooms, and these will do. The down side is that they provide relatively poor image quality and light sensitivity. The Sigma 18-125mm also comes to mind as an all-in-one, but this lens has the same problems - cheap though, only $280.
But frankly, it would be a shame to use such mediocre lenses on a 30D.
If you're willing to spend $500, the Canon 17-85mm zoom is a great walk around lens. It doesn't have the reach to zoom in on small details, but it should cover about 85% of your needs. It's only weakness is that it under-performs a tad from 17-24mm.
For roughly $1000, the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom would be my favorite. Image quality and light sensitivity are excellent. If not for the build quality, this would be an L lens (the price certainly is). The 17-55mm zoom range is fairly limited, but still sufficient for street photography, indoor photography, landscapes, and portraits.

Normally any type of lens that is in the range of 17-70mm is a great lens. Those numbers I listed are not a actual lens but thats the range you want to stick within. That range will do perfect for just about any shooting occasion. If your just shooting family photos and your a newbie I wouldn't spend the money on a lens with a F-stop of 2.8 you will pay a really high price for it. I would stay away from Tamron, Sigma or any other cheap lenses there build quality is just not the same as Canon and Canon's optics are superior.

From a personal attitude, i might want to propose you to flow for the 40D and the 28-100 thirty 5 mm lens. It delivers a valuable decision of focal distances to settle on on from, and that i have taken some very valuable surroundings pictures with mine. The 100 thirty 5 mm placing will also allow you to seize some beautiful animal pictures, close-ups, etc. The macro placing in this blend is rather solid, and that i love the more effective aperture that this lens provides. If this is going to be your first DSLR, do not difficulty. that is a tremendous determination for DSLR novices, to boot as intermediate or perhaps more advantageous clients. ordinary to apply, yet helpful!. If the fee has similarities, flow for this one!!!
