i understand that it's unhealthy, and all of that, but i was just wondering what it actually is about taking too many laxatives that gives you stomach cramps.

Laxatives work in a couple of ways. Some can increase the rhythmic contractions along your digestive tract. These occur naturally to help digest and move the food along the tract. This is called peristalsis. However, if you take too much or take a strong laxative, it can become uncomfortable for the person.

If this occurs and you need one at another time, ask your pharmacist for a mild laxative or stool softner. It will be a lot less unpleasant.

Do not overdose or take them too regularly however. They can cause incontinence and you can become dependent. I've seen a number of girls become dependent on them for weight loss purposes yet have no idea they are trying to rid a few kilos but may be developing bowel problems. It's not the best way for weight loss!

Hope this answers your question!

Some laxatives advertise that they give you relief without cramping... so it sounds like to me that you could get cramping with regular doses of some laxatives.

It is overloading your system with chemicals designed to produce a relaxing of the muscles within the digestive track. This short circuits your body and causes pain throughout your intestinal system. Do not exceed the recommended dosage and do not become laxative dependent.
