POP is short for Post Office Protocol, which is a series of commands used to retrieve e-mail from the mail server. Most e-mail applications (like Outlook Express) use POP.

You don't need to disable it, your friend needs to configure their POP settings to access the mailserver that their email is kept on. It's fairly self-explanatory and the "Help" for Outlook Express can explain what information is needed to configure it.

Have your friend contact their ISP or email provider and have a technician or customer support rep walk them through setting it up (if they offer POP3 email access). If they have it set up already and it's just causing an error, it could be a problem on the mailserver itself or incorrect information (such as a password entered incorrectly). Without knowing the error, I could not give you a definitive answer on that.

Pop3 is a protocol for an email account. If you have an email account with your ISP, they will provide you with the information to connect to the account. The POP3 protocol will allow you to use all the features of Outlook or outlook express.

Pop3 is the protocal used to get emails... it's the most popular
if s/he's getting an error it might be because s/he has the wrong account infomation

if you are not using outlook for Pop3 or IMAP, you proabably shouldn't be using it for email at all

you can use it with 'some' internet mail accounts (ex. hotmail) yahoo uses pop3 but you have to pay extra

Go to Tools, Accounts, Server Information, Incoming Mail Server (POP3) should say mail.xxxxxx.com and Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) should say either mail.xxxxxx.com or smtp.xxxxxx.com - depending on the ISP's instructions.
xxxxxx.com = the ISP name e.g. yahoo.com, comcast.net
-MM
