Actually all of the above are incorrect if you are an EU citizen.
you may then travel using your ID card.
If you are not you will need a passport.

Yes, you do. Although strangely, before the European Union 'made travel so much easier', you didn't, and could instead pick up a British Excursion Document at the ferry ports, or a British Visitors Passport at any post office while you waited.

Yes it certainly is. And on the way back from France to England on the Eurostar they may well inspect your passport more than once so make sure you have it handy. They check carefully for illegal immigrants.
