Nitrous oxide is an analgesic guys...it is still used but is minimally effective which is why it isn't used often. Becuase it is an analgesic and not an anesthetic it does not get you numb...you still feel the pain (even at high concentrations you react to the pain) but you care less about the pain. It has to be used in conjunction with anesthetic...so you would still get an injection. In adults the effects are decreased, which is why it is mostly used on children and young adults. From another standpoint, it takes longer to administer the nitrous for a procedure....and anything that is minimally effective and takes longer to use is often avoided by dentists.

Well, the dental assistant or dentist will put a little covering over your nose so you can breathe in the gas. It doesn't really smell or taste like anything. All I can describe it as feeling very VERY happy. To everyone else (dentists, assistants, etc) it almost seems like the patient on nitrous oxide is a very happy drunk. And as far as anxiety, nowadays dentist offices want you to feel as comfortable as possible and wont do anything if you feel that uneasy or uncomfortable. You shouldn't worry anymore though. I promise dentists do everything in their power to keep you happy and your mouth healthy.

Dentist That Use Gas

out of the past two years mine never used it or asked if i wanted it, but during one visit to have a extraction, the antibotic didnt work and it was still infected so he sent me to an oral surgeon and they did use gas. it was great honestly, i felt absoultely nothing when they pulled the tooth compared to when they give me the shot, because even though it may not hurt i can always feel the pressure when hes pulling on the tooth.........only bad thing about the gas is it cost me like 240.00 to have the tooth pulled and on a regular visit it would only be like 80.00, so maybe they dont use it as much due to the cost difference.

Because there Malpractice has gone through the roof, by eliminating nitrous they can lower the premium.

Actually they do use it and it helps to relax patients while they get their dental work done. I find our patients are happy we have this option for them to feel a little better.
