Yes it definitely is. You used to be able to get a day passport but not anymore, you need to have a full one.

I've crossed there and back. We didn't show our passports from England to France, but we did from France to England. So don't risk it. Take your passport with you!

They rarely check on the ferries but are more stringent on the eurostar. I would take one regardless though as you may be asked!!
