Sounds like something in the boot up cycle has become corrupted. It could be the XP software itself or possibly a Registry entry.

I agree with others who say to boot from the CD.

Just put your Windows XP CD in the drive and then hit the reboot button and let it boot up. Select a "repair" action when it asks what you want to do. Just follow the instructions and it should fix your XP issues. This may take a while so be patient.

I also agree with getting a Surge Protector if you don't have one.

We are not talking just a power strip here whereby you can plug several power cords into it.

You need a SURGE PROTECTOR.
Read the protection parameters on the back of the package and you should get on that will provide at least 850 joules of protection. Many today give 1000 joules protection. Usually a good Surge Protector will run about $30 to $40 and they accommodate several power cords and your phone line.

Hope this helps.

boot from the cd, then it should ask if you want to install or repair, choose repair and then relax while windows goes to work. May I also suggest you get a surge protector and a UPS power backup. Well worth the cost.

you need to pop the disc in and choose the repair option when it comes up and you've typed in your administrator password then type in chkdsk /r
