slow twitch fibers (ST-fibers) are relatively slow in flexing, the tension is less and rahter consume oxigen than produce energy (aerobic metabolism). They have a larger capacity for endurance exercises and thus last longer, meaning those muscles dont get tired that easily. These are known as type-1 fibers and are mainly used when the body is on low exert exercises and long endurance such as when jogging. These muscles have a lot of arteries and mitochondria, the powerhouses of a cell. Carbohydrates as well as fat are used as energy sources.

Fast twitch fibers (FT-fibers, type-2) are rather the contrary in most aspects. They're mainly used in non-aerobic activities and have a low aerobic strength. They generate the most strength and can do so very fast, but dont have much endurance.
Type2 fibers are further split up in type2a and type2b, based on how much energy is produced under aerobic circumstances. 2a fibers have more arteries, more mitochondria and a larger amount of aerobic enzymes than 2b fibers. Of all fiber types, 2b has the highest strength capacity but also the lowest endurance capacity.

A weightlifter or another athlete involved in power- or explosive sports has a high percentage of type2 fibers, while a marathon runner a high percentage of type1 fibers

Slow twitch or red muscle fiber:Primarily involved in endurance type applications. These fibers have a better oxygen retention ratio than fast twitch. They will appear less striated and longer, sleeker in appearance. These are the type of fibers found predominantly in long distance runners and other endurance athletes.
Fast twitch:These are white muscle fibers mostly responsible for explosive movements such as sprinting, jumping and weight lifting.Fast twitch muscles will take on a more massive appearance and fatigue fairly early once under a load.
Plyometrics is the technique of refining fast twitch muscle fibers but it's been shown to be ineffective on people who do not have a genetic predisposition to higher white fiber concentration.Being a competitive power lifter it's my goal to build the most fast twitch muscle as I can.

As Bitstorm said. Note that there is no evidence that you grow more muscle fibers of any type, training tends to just make the ones you have bigger. There is also no conclusive evidence on whether you can convert fiber types from one to another.

So, take a world class sprinter and get them to run mile after mile and they can never be a world class distance runner. Take a world class distance runner, feed them up, make them lift heavy weights and they will not become a world class sprinter. Most of 'normal' people are somewhere in the middle, so if you train for endurance (type I) or power (type II) you can make good progress.
