Ok, here is an answer from a muslim;
Singing of girls is a highly debated issue in Islamic literature. Some muslims tend to go for the conservative approach to everything just in case. For example muslim women do not have to cover their faces, yet many women do so, it is an extra not a requirment.
Now back to your question. The whole issue of singing is controversial, whether it is with musical accompaniment or not. Some issues succeeded to gain the Muslim scholars’ agreement, while others failed. All scholars have unanimous view on the prohibition of all forms of singing and music that incites debauchery, indecency, or sin.
Now, I will provide you with a link that throughly addresses this issue. My personal conclusion is that her family is religious and are taking extra measures to abide by their faith even though most muslims find singing acceptable. The arab & muslim world is full of female singers and it has never been an issue.
Hope the above clarifies

I suppose their reaction and the term "whores" has to do with their perception of the music industry nowadays. They probably see Britney Spears and 50 Cent as the frontiers of the music industry and take them to be representative of the industry as a whole.
I suppose they don't believe in the unconservative ways of Britney Spears and 50 Cent and want to make sure their community is in no way linked to popstars like that.
I also think that when they said that didn't want her singing, they meant in English..because of their possible perception as stated above.
But that isn't the case for all Muslims. Where I come from, Muslims enter the singing competitions and sing onstage all the time. Girls AND guys. And no one objects. In fact, many cheer their own race on. Then again, there are many different types of people in every race and religion. Some stick to rules more and others less stringently.

discussing the state of the person who has gotten used to listening to singing: Hence you find that those who have gotten used to it and for whom it is like food and drink will never have the desire to listen to the Qur’aan or feel joy when they hear it, and they never find in listening to its verses the same feeling that they find when listening to poetry. Indeed, if they hear the Qur’aan, they hear it with an inattentive heart and talk whilst it is being recited, but if they hear whistling and clapping of hands, they lower their voices and keep still, and pay attention. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 11/557 ff)
Some say that music and musical instruments have the effect of softening people’s hearts and creating gentle feelings. This is not true, because it provokes physical desires and whims. If it really did what they say, it would have softened the hearts of the musicians and made their attitude and behaviour better, but most of them, as we know, are astray and behave badly.

so? did u asked them why they don't their girl to sing in public?
remember that people are free and they do wat ever they like u can make them except somethin they don't want to, also remember that not everyone sees things in the way you/we see it. Islam is a Religion where different views and cultures are mixed, u might have a white, black and Asian Muslims sharing the same faith but not the same ideas, am sure that the case will vary from one family to another one, u have Asians conserved ppl more that a white family or black family, just try not to make everyone ware the same shirt coz it might not fit them.

i'm a muslim and honestly i have no idea ....... i'm not saying it's not true - just that i don't know of any such case
maybe there's something in the lyrics that bothered them - but as far as i know singing is allowed ............. or maybe, they're not educated enough and they don't trust other ppl's good intentions
interesting case really, i'll keep my eye on this one
EDIT: i just read fatimah's response and i would like to add that i had no idea about this - learned something today ......... thanks sister
