This is a tip I got from a proffesional decorator, and it works like a dream.
Paint the ceiling first, taking the colour about 1 inch (2 1/2 cm ) down the walls. Then using a largish 2-3 inch brush take a firm confident paint line along the wall, missing the ceiling by the merest fraction. From the floor you will never notice the paint does not actually touch the corner. Even works if you have coving, use the same method, treating the underside of the coving as the corner. It really does work.

When you've done enough of them, it comes naturally. Paint the ceiling first and overlap about half an inch onto the wall. When you paint the wall, stop about one eighth of an inch short of the ceiling. This disguises the fact that neither the wall nor the ceiling are straight.
If you're no good at cutting-in, get a cheap plastic ruler (a 15 inch one from WH Smith works well) and hold that against the ceiling with the bevelled side upwards. Be careful not to get paint on the hand that holds the ruler or you'll get an interesting design on the ceiling.

Forget masking tape too fiddly and can take paint of the wall
Hold a straight edged piece of cardboard (eg side of a cereal box)
on the wall pushing it up to the ceiling, then use a paint brush to paint the ceiling up to the cardboard, do all the edges like this then use a roller on the main part of the ceiling.
Avoid 'professional' painters as many have less more skill than the average DIY er, and they charge too much.

Put masking tape right up to the wall and then paint so even if you do go over the masking tape when its removed you will have a perfect straight line

wall next to ceiling?? I thought all walls were????
Anyway, the most effective and common mehtod has got to be masking tape - i used it recently when i painted my bathroom and it's great - just make sure it's stuck down properly and you dont leave it too long to take off. If the paint completely dries - it can take a bit away with it when you peel it off

use a laser level to get a straight line. than apply masking tape or painters tape on the area next to where you are painting to keep the paint from running.

One of the tidiest ways is to put some decorative coving up first and then paint. The coving sticks out so you won't accidentally paint over any of it. Use a small brush when you get close to the coving though.
