Meditating is just enjoying peace and quiet and focusing on your inner peace. There is no fixed period of time to meditate. You just have to focus and and get your mind to be steady. It relieves stress.

Meditation is a journey to understand self. Meditation like goal setting needs an objective, a reason. Some meditate for gaining concentration,to control the emotions etc, which has been proven and advocated by the medical profession. These are however base level meditation, the relegious personnel goes beyond these levels and there the objective is to realise the self. In this busy world we hardly get time to spend for ourself where we sit alone and reflect on something. Once one tries this he will start seeing the other mans point of view, and immediately stress is gone, anger is gone, well it makes you feel good. To start mediatation there is no auspicious time date or anything like that, if you feel it any day, time is alright. However early mornings and late nights are advised, definitely not mandatory. In the early morning just when the world is slowly wakening, to sit and listen to nature can be an ideal start. you can hear the birds coming out of their slumber, waking each other, The young ones in the nest demanding food, the mother consoling and preparing to go out to gather a bite or two, telling Dad to be cautious, the nocturnal birds flying fast to beat the sunlight, as the sun rises majestically in the East. Well there are no end to such delights, you must learn to see all these in your minds eye without actually looking, at one point you will hear nothing, and then you will be transported to a new world of pure joy which has no bounderies. As you sit meditating you must not think about your enemies, the fight you had, this will only fill your mind with negetive energy and you will be actually achieving the oposite to what meditation should achieve. If you plan to do meditation to get some special super powers, you will be disappointed, what will happen is you will smile more laugh more, the child in you will surface, you will enjoy with basic things, you will start seeing things which you never saw till now, like the beauty of a flower or the song of a bird, or the dew drops etc. Regarding experiences it varies from people to people and if your ambition is to realise the self, you can do it only if there is absolute silence, eradicatin of all thoughts, the day you achieve it you will realise what the meditators call as Bliss.

Dhyana is the right word. Because there is no equivalent world to translate it in english language, let us use the word meditation for convenience. Dhyana is different from the meditation. for meditation an object is required to meditate upon, say an idol or a picture. Only three religions accept dhyana as a part of them - Hinduism, Jainism & Budhism.
It had its origin in Sanathana Dharma from India. it is the whole effort of indian consciousness. there were thousands of great meditators. they did nothing except meditate. why meditate?
for many, it is associated with religion. that is partially correct. they concenterate their thoughts on god. some meditate upon a idol, some close thier eyes & meditate. some keep their eyes open while meditating. some meditate while in the market or wherever they are.
meditation helps improves oneself. it also helps one realise the almighty. whatever method one uses, it all leads to the ultimate. it helps one throw away all that rubbish one accumulates through the day. infact it is a way to de-program oneself. in dhyana a person may seek peace, truth or god or oneself. its a journey beyond the ultimate truth. infact the journey of dhyana begins after one reaches the almight and goes beyond that. this has been happening for centuries. thats why great dhyanis are a rare phenomenon. a look at thier eyes, you will see the glitter. they talk in a mystical languge which is beyond the grasp of commom man, that includes the religious heads and holy men.
to enjoy dhyana(meditation) one should not have any gret expectations. go with an open mind. be ready to lose oneself. its total give up. for beginners they can start with concenteration, then move to meditaiton. concenterations helps one focus. during meditation one can keep eyes closed initially and the move on to meditation with open eyes.
dhyana is a process of being aware of oneslef, a witnessing. just be aware of whats happening inside you, be a witness to all that is happening. dont bother what is happening to the other guy or thing around you. if a stray thought comes allow it go come in and pass through. no harm in allowing it. be aware, be a witness.
this much i know. but what happens to a person need not happen to you. you experience need not be confirmed by another authority whether it is the right one or not.
by dhyana or meditation you will not get any special abilities like the ones described in religious books. after meditation i am clear that i am a person with clarity, my purpose is to live life. there is nothing good or bad in this cosmos. with meditaion you are person with awareness. you become awakened. very few people can recognise such a person.
so go ahead, take a jump.

Hi Meditation is a way of relaxing the body and mind at the same time. it is generally percieved that you meditate for an 1 hr.
1. find a quiet palce inyour house flat, turn off the phone and light a candle, turn off main light. and sit in a comfortable position on the floor.
2. stare at the candle and focus on the flame,
3. take 3 deep breaths as you inhale and hold draw out the anxiites of the day as you exhale release the tension/anger do this 3 times.
4. Then you start to focus on positve images.
5. you will hear your breathing become more shallow. then when you feel comfortable get up and just reamin in the room focusing on the glow of the candle.
As you do this more often you will develop your own comfort zone, later buy a relaxation cd new world music do a wonderful selection. and you wil start to fell l ot better physcialy and spiritually good luck

I meditate and it had opened me up to a world i had never known. And yes some changes to occur of a very good nature.
You will always get what you can handle at the time.
Look up meditation and see what you find that feels right to you. Because it certainly goes beyond just relaxation if you want that so.. many people use meditation to find their higher self as many believe everything you wish to know is within you and I for one think that is the case.

Well the trick is being comfortable, so you should meditate simply how long you feel like you should. It diverges from Western philosophy in that there is no right answer of how. But the way that it is described is to remove yourself of all control of your thoughts, and let your mind wander wherever it wants to, without "your" influence. Try to simply disengage.
What is happening physiologically when you meditate is that you enter a hypnogogic state. We all do this right before we fall asleep. When you are having vivid and nonsensical "hallucinations" before you go to sleep, that is it.
As for special abilities, no, you won't alleviate yourself from the world's problems, but meditation definitely can help you take on the obstacles of life in stride.

Well..
meditation, whether by long hours of breathing excersises or contemplation on the meaning of life, is a form of concentrating your thoughts and mind onto one thing, and shutting off all other thoughts.
It helps in the following ways:
1. teaches humans to shut their mental voice and listen to their surroundings.
2. elevates the power of concentration
3. when done with the right purpose, it helps the mind to think clearly, and efficiently.
4. helps humans realize theyre not gods, and teaches self restraint and overall happiness.
My experiences were many. I never really felt the need to go deeply into the respective philosophies in order to meditate properly. I did not change my religion. I learned that each culture has a good and bad habits and I as a believer in God will make God happy by taking the good habits and leaving out the bad.
Direct meditation also allows me to control my dreams and thoughts. If you can control your thoughts, you can control your circumstances.
Peace

If you haven't started meditating yet, I recommend that you avoid doing so. It isn't going to benefit you spiritually in any manner. If anything, it's the "gateway drug" of New Age spirituality, which is not of God.
I know that answer is likely to ruffle some feathers as there are many proponents of the practice, but anything you experience that is "spiritual" through this means or results in any sort of "special abilities" should be of concern as opposed to a cause for celebration. What isn't of God has other origins, logically.
Just my two cents worth on that.

Meditation is to stay off thoughts. Usually the thoughts control us rather than we control them. So practising meditation helps us in controling our thoughts.
It isn't necessary to meditate in a specific way. Every activity in our life can be a meditation if we can keep the unecessary thoughts from bothering us. Complete concentration is what meditation feels like.

Meditating is good for relieving stress. Breath in and out deeply. Try not to let your mind run wild, but still your mind by concentrating on your breathing.
One can have visions, (see pictures in their minds eye). Actually
hear a voice, as our spirit has telepathic ability. Some even
leave their bodies and travel spiritually. But all those things
take practice.
Opening oursleves up spiritually will open us up to unwanted
things too. Imagine a light all around you in your minds eye.
Ask out loud, using the Power of the Spoken word, and ask
our Highest Power to guide and protect you.
